Millennium Resorts – The Big Show

In an age of no more Daft Punk to give us retro dance grooves, Millennium Resorts send up ranges of Texas mesquite flavored vintage sounds and scales that are scattered, fun, and danceable moods. This song is pieced together with some stings of dissonance, but they manage to put together a different style of atmosphere ambience… even if that bass is waaaaaay too out of place.

Take a listen to this song yourself. The Big Show has been making waves for about a month now.

“On the surface, the track is a little ditty about the trials and tribulations of life in the 21st century. The verse sincere. The chorus sarcastic. But like our previous single “Happiness,” it’s much more than that and we’ll let the listener decide” – Millennium Resorts.

If you took the bass out of the song, you’d have a semi-psychedelic sorta banger that Diplo would be open to listening to twice. However, the great moments of this piece are torn away by less than good mixing and an all over the digital place incoherence. That guitar solo at the end of the song is reminiscent of Tom Morello, with the intro being an electro-popped version of a Pink Floyd cover band. There is sonic excellence, but sadly, it doesn’t go anywhere too magical. The overdubbed reverb stays a little too long for my liking and as much as these guys can shred a six string, the guitar takes away from the vocals.

The radio edit they have released is a big improvement in many ways, yet at the same time, takes away the loose and free aspects that make The Big Show an interesting listen. If they focused on less bass and delivered more ghostly vocals against their synthesized ambient flow, these guys would be making a much bigger name for themselves. There is a lot of potential and I hope they keep pursing their sound, as long as they try to be individuals and stray away from copycatism.

I wish them the best. Give them a listen if you’re burnt out on old Slowdive songs and want something with a bit more unbalanced Garagebanger hedonism.
