Heno’s animated video for “Goliath” could easily be seen on a bump on Adult Swim – an outlandish array of translucent chalkboard outlines permeate the visual as the Ethiopian songwriter/producer raps fearlessly.
The video features a biblical reference to underdog David’s victory against the infamous Goliath immersed in surreal imagery. Vibrant and celestial, LA transplant Heno (with roots in Maryland) delivers “Goliath,” an inviting fusion of smooth R&B keys, soft synths and pungent bass with a universal message.
LA-based artist Heno (formerly known as Why Fi) strays away from the societal norm with his own sonorous melange composed of R&B, Experimental, and Soul self-described as “Alternative Soul.” Without formal music training, the Ethiopian-American grew up in Takoma Park, Maryland listening to radio nonstop carefully studying song composition, structure, lyrics and melody. A former Howard University student and certified nursing assistant, Heno deviated from his plans of being a neuropsychologist and gravitated towards a musical climate.
Inspired by, Jay-Z, Flying Lotus, Kanye West and Kid Cudi, the songwriter/producer offers verbal dexterity, scintillating production and a refreshing doctrine of positivity. A proponent of resilience and overcoming struggle, he has conquered bouts with depression and substance abuse with unwavering optimism. He expresses, “I see humor in about everything because the climate is so shitty right now, and even systemically, all we can do is look at it and laugh at how ridiculous it is to get through it.” Whether honing in on social issues with JPEGMAFIA on “Gentrify” or delivering soul-baring bars on “Goliath,” Heno births an invigorating style and movement audiences will find difficult to resist.
