How did you develop your interest in fashion design?
I’ve always been interested in fashion since I was a young kid. The city I grew up in, Staten Island, influenced my sense of fashion growing up. I always felt the need to have Jordans on and rock Polo or Nike. Watching Hip-Hop award shows and seeing rappers rock the dopest outfits inspired the way I dressed and acted.
What is your philosophy about the ART of fashion?
To me, fashion is expressing yourself artistically through clothes, it’s a very easy thing to do but not everyone can do it well. I feel like expressing yourself through fashion requires a certain level of creativity that not everyone has.
What does Waves mean to you?
The concept of Waves literally means to “be the wave”. It means to be the latest trend and center of the hype in anything and everything that you do. That’s what I want my clothing line to be, I want to expand my creative platform and gain recognition for creating art.
Who are the most influential fashion designers to you?
There’s a select group of fashion designers that inspire me, they are Ian Connor, Virgil Abloh, Andre Johnson, Andy Santana, and Kanye West. Out of all those people, Kanye West inspires me the most because his level of creativity is out of this world. He’s so futuristic with his approach, he’s so ahead of his time.
Can you describe your style?
My style basically consists of bombers, slim-fitted pants, suede shoes, and polos.
What are your plans for the future?
I plan on having a fashion show, pop-up shop, and new collection launch in 2017.
How do you stay up to date regarding fashion?
I view the way people around me dress, also watching award shows really gives me a sense of the latest trends in the fashion industry.
How would you relate past and present fashion trends?
It’s really changed, for example from a Hip-Hop perspective, rappers used to wear baggy pants, timbs, durags, different sports jerseys in the 90s and early 2000s. Now, the clothes have become more slim, you see rappers wearing skinny jeans, customized fitted clothing, and distressed clothing.
What do you think are the latest fashion trends?
Distressed clothing, oversized clothing, and darker colors.
What kind of person do you think is most attracted to your clothing line?
Waves Supply Co. doesn’t have ideal customers, waves is for anyone and everyone. Your age and background doesn’t matter.
